Lots of organisations are accused of jumping on the bandwagon, ‘woke’ practices and ‘virtue signalling’ during awareness days, weeks and months and this undermines the hard work many individuals and organisations invest in to create lasting change.

As the end of pride month drew near, Halifax entered the spotlight having introduced a voluntary policy for staff to include pronouns on their name badges. This seemingly innocuous step is, apparently, resulting in lost custom as some take their money elsewhere. Looking at it internally, such a small and simple step towards equality, diversity and inclusion can make a massive difference to individuals within the LGBTQ+ community who can elect, with no fuss, to include their own preferred pronoun alongside others within Halifax’s organisation.

Use of pronouns within the workplace is one of many suggestions we include in our equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace training for employers and is one of many steps leadership and organisations can take in their role as an ally striving towards a more inclusive workplace and society.
