At Birkett Long, our intellectual property lawyers – an experienced team combining Chartered Patent Attorneys, European Patent Attorneys, and Chartered Trade mark Attorneys, as well as UK and European-qualified solicitors - understand the importance of the identification and exploitation of your IP assets, keeping ahead of your competitors and developing your market offering.
We are the only law firm in the Eastern region which combines the deep technical knowledge of Patent and Trade mark Attorneys with the broad experience of a 200-year-old firm. We are able to help you not only with the filing and registration of patents, trade mark and design applications but also with the exploitation of the Intellectual Property they contain. If that is via manufacturing, then we have commercial property lawyers who can help you buy the land or the factory, employment lawyers to help you with staffing and corporate lawyers to advise on the structure of the company. If it is via licensing or franchising, our commercial lawyers can help with that.
We call this IP in context.
As your business grows, we can ensure that you have protection in place both in the UK and internationally. When the time comes, we can assist you in the enforcement of those rights.
The creation of IP assets is the creation of value. Birkett Long has experts on hand to help with the creation, realisation, maintenance and disposal of those assets, in order to help you maximise the value you can obtain from your ideas.
An idea can beget a patent application, which might be filed in the UK first, then subsequently elsewhere, either via the International Patent Application, which is formally known as the Patent Cooperation Treaty or “PCT”, or directly, in countries such the USA, China, Japan, India, or in regions such as Europe.
Likewise, a UK trade mark application can be used as a springboard for filing an international application (known as a “Madrid” or “Madrid Protocol” application) which can be used to cover up to 130 different countries, as an alternative to making individual filings in the USA, Europe or elsewhere.
Similarly, an international application (known as a “Hague” application) may be filed to cover a design registration, as well, as or instead of international filings in individual countries.
Birkett Long’s Patent lawyers have decades of experience dealing with various technical fields in patents, including automotive, biotechnology, biochemistry, chemistry, mechanical engineering, medical devices, software, and low-tech innovations.
