Profile
Based in the Colchester office, I specialise in working with young people which includes providing assistance at a police station or in court and my work more broadly covers the law relating to the Modern Slavery Act. I have also developed a keen interest in military cases and guide my clients through interviews with the Royal Military Police or in Court Martial proceedings.
My first action when speaking to any new client is to assess whether the problem they are facing is something that we can help with. If it is a purely criminal matter I will take details of the allegation and what the charges are and explain the procedures in place before they go to court and during the court process, as well as whether the matter is likely to stay in the Magistrates Court or go to the Crown Court.
Tej Thakkar, Head of Regulatory, and I work together on matters such as preparing a Defence Costs Order where a client has been acquitted of a crime in court and the court has awarded costs to the client. Where possible I like to be in an advocacy role in court as that’s the part of my job I enjoy the most.
I also love the variety as I meet so many people in my line of work, from those I’m representing to members of the Armed Forces; no two cases are ever the same, which keeps my role interesting. I chose to specialise in criminal law because I wanted to be able to help those who need it at what is always an extremely difficult time for them. Moving into regulatory work was the next step on from that, still being able to help people but in a different way.
My clients tell me they appreciate that I am hard-working, dedicated and thorough when it comes to preparing their cases. One of my youth clients referred to me as "a proper G" the other week, which I am told is a very big compliment from someone of that age!
When I am not working you’ll either find me out paddleboarding or doing yoga and sometimes I even combine the two and do paddleboard yoga on the lakes in South Essex. I am currently undertaking a yoga teacher qualification and enjoy open-water swimming too.
