Jonathan Perlmutter

Partner, Head of Intellectual Property

Profile

As Head of Intellectual Property, I have a broad-based, highly international practice encompassing patents, trade marks, designs, copyright and associated transactions.

My work includes elements of cryptocurrency technology, blockchain, fintech, insurtech and agritech, as well as more conventional mechanical and electrical engineering work, including medical devices work in particular. We are currently representing patent clients in about 180 countries across the world.

In trade mark terms, my specialisation is leveraging my international network in order to efficiently undertake large international filings for expanding companies and growing brands. We are currently representing clients in about 150 countries across the world.

Through our international office and staff, we are able to continue to represent clients in front of the EPO and the EUIPO, an ability that many smaller firms have lost as a result of the UK leaving the European Union.

I act for a large multi-national software company, an established international retail chain, a medical devices PLC and a variety of well-known brands including restaurants, toys and food stores. I have advised the defence industry and have a Ministry of Defence security clearance.

During my legal studies, I was awarded the James Bushell memorial scholarship and the Hardwicke award by Lincoln’s Inn. I have a first class degree and was called to the Bar in 2006 (although I do not practice as a barrister), and am a UK Chartered Trade Mark Attorney as well as a European Trade Mark and Design Attorney. I am a member of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property.

I regularly provide talks at universities and technology organisations, including UCL/IDEALondon, Norwich University of the Arts, Centrum, Cocoon Networks, the WeWork organisation and Somerset House. I also serve on the AI and Technology taskforce for the Chartered Institute of Trade Mark attorneys.
