As we reflect on a dynamic and successful year at Birkett Long, we’re proud to highlight the moments that shaped 2024. From community outreach and charitable efforts to professional accolades and innovation, the firm has made a meaningful impact both locally and within the legal sector. Here’s a recap of the year’s highlights:
Commitment to core priorities
2024 began with a renewed focus on core priorities, including supporting local causes, advancing sustainability, and promoting diversity, inclusion, and employee well-being. We engaged in various community-driven initiatives and invested in employee development, fostering an inclusive and environmentally conscious workplace.
Recognition for service excellence
In February, Birkett Long was delighted to be shortlisted for the Indie Service Business of the Year award at The Colchester Business Awards. This recognition reflected the firm’s dedication to delivering exceptional customer service, maintaining high standards, and providing tailored legal solutions to clients.
Community fundraising success
March saw the return of our annual quiz night - a spirited evening where departments competed to raise funds for The Birkett Long Community Fund - which received a significant boost thanks to everyone’s generosity.
World Class recognition
In April, Birkett Long earned a prestigious 3-star accreditation from Best Companies, signifying its status as a “World Class Organisation.” This recognition celebrated the firm’s focus on employee well-being, flexible work practices, and fostering a supportive workplace culture.
Arts and charity engagement
In May, solicitor Helena Olexa joined the Mercury Theatre Colchester’s board of trustees, bringing her legal experience and enthusiasm for the arts. Additionally, Elliot Cousins was appointed to the board of trustees at The OutHouse, a Colchester LGBTQ+ charity providing vital services, including counselling and awareness training.
Pro Bono acknowledgement
In June, Karen Morovic and Tim Ogle were honoured on the inaugural Pro Bono Recognition List, endorsed by the Lady Chief Justice. This prestigious list, featuring 3,760 lawyers, celebrates the legal profession’s vital contributions to supporting those in need.
Expansion and website enhancements
In July, our Basildon office moved to the sixth floor of Phoenix House, offering a contemporary, collaborative space for employees and clients. This relocation reinforced our commitment to serving the Essex business community. We also unveiled a redesigned website to enhance user experience and accessibility, ensuring clients can quickly find the expertise they need.
Milestones in law
August was a month of milestones as John Morgan celebrated 55 years in law, including 15 years at Birkett Long. Renowned for his dedication and client-focused approach, John shared his advice for young lawyers: “Work hard, respect your clients, and embrace the challenges.”
Community engagement
In September, we reflected on our active participation in summer community events, including the Hadleigh Show, Essex Pride, the Tendring Show, and Colchester Pride. These engagements strengthened local connections and increased awareness about the firm’s services.
Top tier legal accolades
October brought exceptional recognition in The Legal 500 UK 2025, with Birkett Long achieving top tier rankings in multiple practice areas. Notable accolades included one Hall of Fame member, five Leading Partners, four Next Generation Partners, and four Leading Associates, underscoring the talent and expertise within the firm.
Celebrating success and long-term service
In November, we were honoured to rank 20th among the UK’s Best Mid-Sized Companies to Work For and third among law firms nationwide. This achievement, awarded by Best Companies, celebrated the firm’s outstanding workplace culture and commitment to employee satisfaction. That same month, Nicola Ward and Colin Hyoms from Birkett Long IFA were celebrated for their 35 years of exceptional service to the firm. Their dedication and hard work were recognised with special awards, highlighting Birkett Long’s commitment to retaining and nurturing talent over the long term.
Growth and expansion
December capped off the year with the opening of our new state-of-the-art Chelmsford office. This strategic move supports our continued growth and enhances our ability to provide exceptional client service, further reflecting Birkett Long’s dedication to excellence.
