How do I change my name?

The most common method for changing your name is through the use of a deed. The following circumstances would require you to get a change of name deed completed:

  1. Changing your Christian name or adding a middle name
  2. Changing your name after a gender reassignment
  3. Changing your surname following a divorce to something that is not your maiden name

It can, however, be confusing when a deed is required.

Notably, you can only change a minor’s name (a child under 16 years of age), if everyone with parental responsibility agrees in writing to the change of name. If those with parental responsibility cannot agree, a Court Order must be sought to have the change ordered.

If you think you may require a change of name deed, this is a service we can assist you with. We provide a fixed fee change of name service, which involves us drafting the deed and a meeting at our offices to have the document signed.

Upon completing the deed, we provide certified copies for you to inform organisations and agencies of your new name. For example, the certified copies allow you to apply for a passport and driving licence in your new name.

If you are interested in a change of name deed, please contact me to discuss the process. I am based in our Chelmsford office and can be contacted on 01245 453846 or [email protected].
