Do I need to think about copyright?

The short answer is an emphatic “YES!”, even if only to discount its importance.

If you are in the possession of an idea which you are due to express in some way, such as:

  • an architectural plan
  • an engineering drawing
  • a song
  • a work of fiction
  • a work of art
  • a newly written text of any sort
  • the code for a computer program

It is likely that copyright will be an intellectual property right inherent in your creation.

If you want to find out whether or not you have recourse against copyright infringers, if you are the true owner of your work or if you want to prepare it in some way for commercial exploitation, you will need to understand your copyright position – perhaps just in itself or perhaps as part of a wider appreciation of IP rights, comprising an understanding of your patent, trademark and registered design position.
