John Morgan's 55-year legal milestone is not just a personal achievement but a testament to the respect and trust he has earned from his clients. His career is a shining example of dedication and longevity.

This year also marks 15 years of John's continuing contribution to Essex law firm Birkett Long.

Born in Southend on Sea, John has devoted both his personal and professional life to South East Essex. His fascination with law began during his middle years at Southend High School for Boys and was further cultivated through his law degree at Lincoln College, Oxford. Like many others, he found the intricacies of the law fascinating and challenging.

In March 1969, John joined a newly established practice in Basildon, became a partner, and co-founded a new firm from that earlier practice - a major yet rewarding challenge.

Some early experiences in practice, vivid even today, included being present at The Old Bailey for the sentencing of the notorious Kray twins and being involved in the promotion of the renowned Isle of Wight Music Festival of 1970.

John's career moved into property and company/commercial law. Basildon, which saw large businesses move out and local enterprises emerge, created demand for legal services, which John was pleased to provide.

When retirement beckoned in 2009 after 40 years with the same firm, John decided that he did not want to put aside the accumulated expertise and acquaintances of those years. He was delighted to be offered a chance to work for Birkett Long as a consultant, focusing on business development, particularly in South Essex. His input and insight into the local business environment has been instrumental in the creation and subsequent development of Birkett Long’s Basildon office.

Over many years in practice, John acquired a loyal client following. Many chose to keep in touch and have enjoyed his support and the services of his colleagues at Birkett Long in the last fifteen years.

Throughout his career, John has considered client care and confidence paramount to his work. Knowing the client, both professionally and personally, and understanding their needs and aspirations have been of great importance.

Hence, he now marks his 55 years in the legal profession.

Reflecting on the changes he has witnessed, John notes, "The evolution in law and the profession has been significant, especially with technological advancements—fax machines are long gone, and much else has moved on."

John cites his greatest professional achievement as "maintaining the trust and goodwill of so many clients and acquaintances over a long period of practice". His advice to young lawyers is to "Work hard, respect your clients, and embrace the challenges of this wonderful profession."

David Cant, Partner and Director of Business Development and Marketing at Birkett Long, added, “John’s remarkable 55-year career in the legal profession is a testament to his achievements. We were thrilled when he joined us in 2009, and working with him has been a pleasure.

“His extensive knowledge, impeccable judgment, high standards, empathy, and unwavering commitment to client care have been invaluable. John’s responsiveness to change and willingness to challenge based on his experience have been key.

“John has significantly contributed to our success in South Essex. I’m grateful for his role as a trusted sounding board and wish him continued success and good health.”

John’s longevity in the profession owes much to the approach Birkett Long took 15 years ago. His acceptance of our well-timed and welcoming offer needed little thought.

John strongly believes that Birkett Long offers its staff a rewarding and enjoyable working environment and provides clients with professional and friendly service. Joining the firm was a very happy decision for him, and he looks forward to continuing to contribute to its growth.
