What does family law involve?

The area of family law comprises three core elements: matrimonial, finance and child law. Family lawyers can specialise in areas such as divorce, child custody, cohabitation, adoption, prenuptial agreements and much more.

At Birkett Long, our family law specialists provide services in the areas of divorce, child custody and disputes that arise from cohabitation. We’re here for you and your family when you need us.

How do I know if you’re right for my divorce?

We know that this is a stressful period for everyone involved, and the last thing you want to do is have to constantly change who represents you.

That’s why our family divorce lawyers offer a free 15-minute consultation to get a deeper insight into what you need, and for you to ask questions and gauge the quality of our services.

Do I need a solicitor in court or a tribunal?

Legally, no. You are entitled to represent yourself in court or at a tribunal and bring one person with you to remind you of any important information you may need to recall.

However, family law is very complex, and it can be very difficult for laypersons to familiarise themselves with the law and its practice. For that reason, it is suggested that you retain family law specialists’ services before grappling with the law. Not only can they recall much of the law, they have experience working with cases involving that law, and understand precedent and how to best present your case to a judge or tribunal.

Always consult with local family solicitors and seek out their assistance to reach a favourable outcome.

How are court orders and judgements enforced in family law?

The judgements from courts and tribunals are legally binding, and unless there are practical reasons why one party cannot comply, the courts will seek to enforce the judgement. This normally occurs with spousal maintenance and child contact orders.
